Getting a mortgage with an outstanding CCJ (County Court Judgment) can be tricky, but we’re here to help you through the process.
One of the most popular questions we get is ‘can I get a mortgage with a CCJ?’. The answer is yes! You can still get a mortgage with CCJs. However, it all depends on different factors:
One of the key factors is how recently your CCJ was registered. The older it is, the better chance that you will be successful in finding a lender.
You will have a much better chance of getting a mortgage if the CCJ has been satisfied. This means that you settled any outstanding charges and resolved them with no further action needed. Some lenders prefer a 12-24 month gap from the settlement, but others may be more lenient and give an extension for good faith.
The financial amount of the CCJ can have a major impact. If it’s considered too high or more than what is necessary, which in turn would make lenders less likely to take the risk. However, there are lenders out there albeit with higher rates. As a mortgage is secured against you home, it could be repossessed if you do not keep up the mortgage repayments.
If you are struggling with more than one CCJ, this can cause major issues. History of late or missed payments will restrict your mortgage options and make it difficult to qualify for future loans.
After receiving a CCJ, make sure that you meet payments on all accounts and other agreements to rebuild your credit score.
In that case, it is important to contact the lender as soon as possible so they may help work out an arrangement where their services can still be utilized while rebuilding some of those lost points with them (you’ll never know what might happen).
